Avon is an MLM company whose headquarters are in London, UK but have spread in more than 100 countries.
The Avon Company distributes its products through its distributors who are called Avon representatives, Avon Ladies or Avon men but the majority of distributors are ladies.
How to make money selling Avon
They make their money through:
- Face to face contact
- Door to door sales. An Avon Lady or Avon man goes leaving brochures door to door. They would indicate on the brochure when they would come back to pick the brochure plus any order you might have placed. They would also leave their contact details.
- Can also open small stores in market places or as boutique stalls in the shop malls where they can sell the products. Most of the time, they have to pay for showcasing their products in such places.
- Through sales volume from members of their downline
The Avon products includes:
- personal care/skin care
- beauty
- household products
As you can see, they have a wide range of products which includes lotions, perfume, powders, mascaras, different types of lipsticks, serums, moisturizers, anti-aging products, jewellery, deodorants, toothpaste, hair shampoos, hair styling gels.
Is Avon A Scam
I can say that Avon is not a scam. They have both the customers and the products. It is also one of the oldest MLM companies with revenue of 4.7 billion and about 6.4 million Avon representatives globally (as of 2019).
It is amazing to see a company that started as a perfume company grow into such a magnitude.
What I don’t like about Avon
- Being in company that has been in existence since 1886 and with over 6.4 Million distributors is a good thing but at the same time, it can be difficult to make money.
- There are very many different MLM companies and at times, you might find many within your location where your target customers and prospects would be.
- Among the Many MLM companies in your area, you might also find that many of them are also Avon Distributors.
This can bring in competition:
- between your Avon business and other Avon distributors in your area
Most people who are looking to join an MLM company do not know how to differentiate between one MLM company from another; particularly if they are offering Similar Products.
- Although people can buy from your online shop, it can be difficult as other Avon distributors’ websites look almost similar; A non-Avon person looking to join would hardly differentiate.
- You have to rely on earning money through a very time-consuming way which involves
a) Approaching your family and friends
b) Holding parties
c) Conducting raffles as well as giving out free samples
Although there is nothing wrong with that, it takes a lot of time, effort and money which many people don’t have. This might be one of the contributing factors to the distributor drop out level.
**The last thing I do not like about MLM is that although you are told that you are a business owner, you do not have much control.
If the company decides to close its representation in your country, then you are left with no earnings; for example
- In 2013 Avon closed its branch in France as a result of declining sales.
- In 2018 Avon Australia and Avon New Zealand closed leaving the representatives with a lot of uncertainty
What is the Alternative to Avon?
I used to be an MLM distributor and although you can make money, it’s very difficult to make significant amount that can give you financial and time freedom particularly if you are someone like me with a full-time job and a family to look after (in the evenings and weekends).
